June 2026 - Hoping for More Good Things

In May members welcomed Simon Hope. If his previous demonstration at the club was anything to go by we were in for a busy day covering different projects.


After the notices, Simon began with a shell shaped salt shaker. He mounted a sycamore blank between centres and roughed it down before turning a spigot on each end for the chuck jaws. The blank was then mounted in the chuck and parted off for the lid and base.Simon uses a 3/83⁄8 bowl gouge for much of his work and using this tool, began by truing up the face of the lid section. He then shaped the outside before hollowing out to a depth of about 13mm. He used a fine detail tool to produce a parallel recess with a chamfer and a carbide cutter to finish before sanding using his own design of rotary sander. Simon then began work on the base...
