Our May meeting began as usual with the notices and an introduction to the demonstrator, Darren Breeze.
Darren began with a little of his background history which has included some difficult times but turning has been his saviour. He specialises in enhancing bland timbers with texture and colour and planned to show us some of his techniques.
He began with a sunset bowl. He mounted a sycamore blank on a screw chuck and bringing the tailstock up for extra security, trued up the blank using a long grind bowl gouge. Darren marked out a dovetail recess which he would leave as part of the piece. He then defined where the edge would be and marked the rim to show what wood to remove. Using a pull cut from the centre to the rim, Darren quickly removed excess timber but for good practice and shape, suggested members should use the push cut, starting from the outer edge to the centre. Sharpening the tool for the last cut will ensure a good finish but Darren also used the Simon Hope negative rake scraper to improve the finish before using a Simon Hope inertia sander with sanding paste...
